Size Guide & Made to Measure

Every Motorce suit is cut from your own measurements.Nothing is picked off a size chart, which is why the fit works and why these numbers need to be right. Read this page before anyone picks up a tape.

How it works

STEP ONE

Order your suit

Choose your model, leather, cut and colours.

STEP TWO

Send your measurements

Book a fitting in Welshpool, or have someone measure you at home.

STEP THREE

Approve the proof

We send a design proof. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

STEP FOUR

Built and shipped

Around four to six weeks from approval, shipped Australia-wide.

Before anyone picks up a tape

Most fit problems come from these eight things rather than from the measurements themselves.

  • 01Have someone else measure you. Never measure yourself, you can't hold the tape level on your own back.
  • 02Best done by a tailor or alterations shop if you can get to one.
  • 03Wear a close-fitting base layer, compression gear, or sport shorts and a t-shirt.
  • 04No jeans, no bulky clothing. If you're in looser gear, measure right against the body.
  • 05Tape snug against the body without pinching the skin. Close, but not tight.
  • 06Stand straight with muscles relaxed unless a measurement says otherwise.
  • 07If you ride with a back protector, wear it. The suit has to fit over it.
  • 08Check every measurement twice before you send them.

The 26 measurements

The red numbers on each diagram match the numbers in the list beside it. All measurements in centimetres.

Diagram A: chest, waist, neck and arm length

Chest, waist and neck

Arms by your sides and relaxed. If you ride with a back protector, wear it, the suit has to fit over it.

  1. 1

    Chest

Around the fullest part of the chest, usually level with the nipples but wherever is biggest. Breathe in, then record.

  2. 2

    Waist

Find your navel and wrap the tape around at that level.

  3. 3

    Neck

Around the base of the neck, between the collar bones. This sets where the collar and top of the front zip sit, so keep it comfortable.

  4. 4

    Arm length

Arm bent to an L. From the shoulder pivot, along the outside of the arm, via the elbow, to the most prominent wrist bone.

Diagram B: shoulder to elbow, elbow to wrist, upper arm, forearm and wrist

Down the arm

Keep the arm bent to an L-shape for all five, tape close against the skin.

  1. 5

    Shoulder to elbow

From the shoulder pivot to the point of the elbow joint, along the outside of the arm.

  2. 6

    Elbow to wrist

From the elbow joint down the outside of the forearm to the most prominent part of the wrist bone.

  3. 7

    Upper arm

Flex your bicep. Circumference at the fullest part.

  4. 8

    Forearm

Flex your forearm. Circumference at the fullest part.

  5. 9

    Wrist

Around the wrist in line with the wrist bone. Comfortable, not tight.

Diagram C: shoulder width across the back

Across the shoulders

Head and neck forward, arms slightly forward, as if you were on the bike.

  1. 10

    Shoulder width

Across the back between the shoulder pivot points, where the shoulder seam will sit.

Diagram D: front neck to navel

Front of the body

Tape close to the skin, following the curve of your body rather than straight down.

  1. 11

    Front neck to navel

From the centre of your collarbones down the front of the body to the navel line.

Diagram E: back neck to navel

Back of the body

Head and neck forward. This one and the last need to finish level with each other.

  1. 12

    Back neck to navel

From the nape of your neck down the back to the navel line.

Diagram F: front neck through crotch to back neck, and hips

Through the body

Stand with your feet slightly wider than your shoulders.

  1. 13

Front neck through crotch to back neck

Start between the collarbones, down the front, under the crotch and up to the nape of the neck. Head tilted forward for the longest measurement.

  2. 14

    Hips

Around the widest part of the seat, where the bottom of the front zip would sit.

Diagram G: upper thigh, lower thigh, knee, calf and ankle

Around the leg

Foot up on a chair or low stool so the leg is bent to an L.

  1. 15

    Upper thigh

Circumference at the fullest part of the thigh, roughly 10cm below the crotch line.

  2. 16

    Lower thigh

Circumference about 10cm above the knee cap.

  3. 17

    Knee

Around the leg in line with the centre of the knee cap.

  4. 18

    Calf

Calf muscle tensed. Circumference at the fullest part.

  5. 19

    Ankle

Around the ankle at the ankle bone. Not too tight.

Diagram H: inseam, navel to knee, knee to ankle and navel to ankle

Down the leg

Follow the contour of the body. Number 20 sets the length of the suit, so take care with it.

  1. 20

    Inseam

Starting high in the groin, down the inside of the leg to the most prominent part of the ankle bone.

  2. 21

    Navel to knee

Down the outside of the leg, from level with the navel to the centre of the knee cap.

  3. 22

    Knee to ankle

Down the outside of the leg, from the knee cap to the ankle bone.

  4. 23

    Navel to ankle

Down the outside of the leg, from level with the navel to the ankle bone.

Diagram I: total length and height

Full length

These let us sanity-check everything else before we cut.

  1. 24

    Total length

Head and neck forward. From the nape of the neck, down the centre of the back, finishing in line with the ankle bone.

  2. 25

    Height

Your overall height. Stand straight but relaxed.

  3. 26

    Weight

    Your current weight in kilograms.

Diagram J: under bust measurement for women's suits

Women's suits, two extra

Wear a sports bra when these are taken.

  1. 27

    Under bust

Chest circumference just under the bust, about 7cm below the nipple line.

  2. 28

    Bra size

Band and cup size, for example 12B.

Fit

A race suit is meant to be snug. Leather gives a little with wear, so a new suit feels firm at first, that's correct, not a fault. Armour has to stay over the joint in a slide, which it can't do if the suit is loose.

Don't add room "to be safe". We build the allowances in. Measure the body accurately and let us handle the rest.

Returns

Because each suit is cut for one person, we can't accept returns unless the suit is faulty. Measurements are the customer's responsibility, which is why we ask you to sign them off.

If something isn't right when it arrives, contact us, we'd rather fix it than have you ride in a suit that doesn't fit.

Not confident with the tape?

Come to the Welshpool showroom and we'll measure you ourselves. About twenty minutes, and it removes the guesswork entirely. Appointment only.
